Operate a continuous press for the production of engineered wood panels

Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to set up, operate and shut down a continuous press used in the production of engineered wood panels.

The unit applies to individuals who work as production operators and technicians in an engineered wood panel facility. Operators generally work under broad or limited direction to complete routine activities related to their own work, and take responsibility for their work.

All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements

Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Prepare for pressing operation

1.1 Review and check work order, workplace health and safety requirements, environmental protection practices and emergency procedures for pressing operation with appropriate personnel

1.2 Identify and report hazards and use personal protective equipment according to workplace requirements and health and safety legislation to maintain safe work practices

1.3 Select the type and quantity of chips, flakes or fibre to be pressed, from a storage location

1.4 Conduct pre-start checks on equipment according to manufacturer recommendations and site requirements

1.5 Plan pressing process according to site procedures

1.6 Communicate plan with relevant personnel as required, to ensure safety and production requirements are met

2. Form, press, test and transfer finished engineered wood panels

2.1 Set and adjust press pressures, temperatures and product parameters according to production requirements

2.2 Check operational condition and set-up of former to confirm mat condition

2.3 Check forming equipment for defects and position to load press according to standard operating procedures

2.4 Press engineered wood panels while monitoring and adjusting the panel position, feed rate, mat condition and press condition

2.5 Plan size changes and line speeds to meet production schedules

2.6 Regularly assess pressed engineered wood panels and thickness changes and make necessary changes to former, press set-up and blending requirements

2.7 Test engineered wood panels samples to confirm adherence to industry standard, and reject defective panels

2.8 Dispose of defective engineered wood panels according to environmental protection requirements

2.9 Transfer finished engineered wood panels for further processing according to site requirements

3. Shut down, clean equipment and record information

3.1 Shut down equipment in coordination with designated stop time and other line operators according to site procedures

3.2 Separate and remove engineered wood panel and forming equipment from press using unloading equipment

3.3 Strip and clean blending equipment, press and handling equipment according to standard operating procedures

3.4 Clear foreign material, dust and debris from machine area according to workplace requirements

3.5 Record and report pressing process and equipment faults to appropriate personnel
